Facebook may be developing an official Messenger desktop app for Mac, according to TechCrunch. The technology website obtained a blurry photo that allegedly shows a Facebook employee using the Messenger client on Mac, which would be easily accessible from the OS X dock as opposed to a tab in a web browser.

Messenger for Mac appears to have a navigation tab bar in the bottom left with options matching the Messenger for iOS mobile app, including Recent, Groups, People and Settings. These menu options are reportedly not found in unofficial Messenger apps, making it more likely the app is not a third-party version.
The company's goal is likely to create a standalone Messenger experience on Mac, similar to how it released a dedicated Messenger app for iOS in August 2011. But unlike when Messenger was detached from the main Facebook app on iOS in July 2014, the web version of the chat platform may remain available alongside the desktop app.

It’s unclear but seemingly unlikely that Facebook would require users to chat via the desktop software instead of the website. We have no information about when or even if Facebook might release Messenger For Mac. The company often builds and internally tests apps that never ship. Still, this app seems like a smart move. Slack has proven people enjoy a dedicated desktop app for messaging. It could help Facebook box out competitors like Google, WeChat, Line, Kik, and KakaoTalk.

Facebook released a Messenger desktop app for Windows in March 2012, and said it was 'busy working on Messenger for Mac' at the time, but the company discontinued its Windows app two years later and has yet to release a Mac app. Facebook also launched Messenger.com last April as a standalone web chat client.
Facebook often internally tests apps that never ship, so it remains unclear when or if Messenger for Mac will be released. A company spokesperson declined to 'comment on rumor or speculation,' but author Josh Constine said that is 'the same boiler plate response' he has received about rumors proven true in the past.

This seems to be an interesting problem. I started annotating PDFs on my iPad using GoodReader. Such annotations always show up fine in another PDF readers on other platforms. Then, more recently I wanted to do a similar things on my MacBookPro. At the time, I didn't realize Preview provides this feature. The App Store provides an abundance of choices for PDF annotation programs. I chose PDFProfessional since it only costed a few bucks. I soon noticed it had a problem similar to the one you described. I could see lines and scribble, but not text notes in other viewers unless I clicked and expanded the text box. Otherwise the text box seemed empty.

Last month PDFProessional released an update and this fixed that problem.

Tablets are still far from the ideal platform for word processing from start to finish, but if you have an iPad and you need to edit your documents, Microsoft Word for iOS is your best choice, by far. Microsoft keeps improving all of its mobile Office apps unobtrusively, adding features that have long been in the Windows and OS X versions, such as the ability to open files in the OpenDocument format used by the open-source office suites LibreOffice and OpenOffice. Microsoft recently optimized its Office apps for the new iPad Pro, and I wrote most of this review using Word on that high-powered tablet, typing the text on Apple's Smart Keyboard, and sometimes using the Apple Pencil to move the cursor and select text. I found the experience better than anything I've tried on a tablet running Android, iOS, or Windows. Note that when Microsoft demonstrated Office on the iPad Pro during Apple's keynote introducing the new tablet, it showed the Apple Pencil being used to mark up documents—but that feature still hasn't been released, although it may arrive early this year.

My experience with Word on the iPad Pro was mostly, but not entirely, good. I'll talk about the good parts first. The generous 2,732-by-2,048-pixel screen on the iPad Pro makes it easy to see more of a document than you can easily see on any other mobile device. The optional Smart Keyboard for the iPad Pro has a solid feel, not quite as good as a laptop or desktop keyboard, but good enough for short bursts of work.

The keyboard gives you access to Word's Control, Option, and Command keys, just like the keyboard you use with OS X, though I can't get used to its lack of an Escape key at the upper left or anywhere else. You can use the Control, Option, and Command keys to navigate a Word document from the keyboard. For example, Control-Left takes you to the start of a line, Option-Right moves to the next word, and so on.

Furthermore, when you're using the iPad Pro with the Smart Keyboard, a toolbar appears at the foot of the window with autocorrect suggestions, so you can select a word from the toolbar without lifting your hand from the keyboard.

The same toolbar includes icons that add bold, italics, or underlining to a word, undo or redo your typing, and copy selected text to the clipboard. Other apps, including Apple Pages, also use similar foot-of-the-screen toolbars, but with a different set of features; for example, Pages lacks Word's Copy icon but adds a less-useful icon for enlarging or reducing text size. Other good parts of Word on the iPad include support for iOS's split screen feature, so you can open a Web page or spreadsheet or any other document in one pane of the iPad's screen—but you can't open two Word documents at the same time, which is what I most often need. I hope that feature appears soon in one of Microsoft's frequent updates.

One notable difference between Word on the iPad Pro and a standard iPad: The iPad Pro's onscreen keyboard includes a Tab key; the standard iPad's onscreen keyboard doesn't include a Tab. Word on an ordinary iPad adds a Tab key to the toolbar above the keyboard, and it makes the undo, redo, and copy icons accessible only after you first click a different icon on the toolbar that brings up a secondary toolbar with the icons you want. It's definitely easier on the iPad Pro.

The Less Good
The drawbacks of Word as I experienced it on the iPad Pro include inconsistent keyboard shortcuts, so that some OS X shortcuts work and some don't. For example, under OS X you can delete the preceding word with Option-Delete, but the same keystroke only deletes the preceding letter in iOS. Under OS X, Command-Down moves to the next paragraph, but in iOS, the same keystroke moves to the end of the document, and you need to use Option-Down instead to move to next paragraph. Also, despite the enormous computing power in the iPad Pro, Word for iOS won't display a word count, not even in the Properties panel accessible from the top-line menu. Plenty other writing app display word counts, so this feels like a oversight here. In an odd, intermittent problem, the cursor sometimes appears on line a different from the one you're typing in, so if you press the Delete key you delete letters that you didn't intend to delete.

Anyone who uses Word under OS X, more or less daily, as I do, may need to remember that many things that you're used to finding on a menu are instead managed by touch-screen gestures. For example, you won't find a Zoom feature on any of Word's menus—but, just like everywhere else in iOS, you can use a gesture to zoom in or out. Run dmg on mac. The Threat

All versions of OS X through 10.4 (Tiger) have included a Unix-based firewall called ipfw. In security parlance, ipfw is a packet-filtering firewall: it checks each packet coming or going through the Mac’s network interfaces against a set of rules, and allows it to pass or blocks it.

Packet-filtering firewalls like ipfw classify network traffic two ways: by type, using port numbers, and by origin and destination, using IP addresses. When you select that option, you’ll see a list of allowed and blocked programs. If you’d like to block all nonessential traffic, you can select Allow Only Essential Services, but beware: doing so will break some applications. You’ll still be able to browse the Web and use e-mail, but other inbound connections will be blocked.

Socket filters are less flexible than a packet filter like ipfw. Applications that are allowed to accept network connections will accept them from anywhere on the Internet; they can’t be told to distinguish trusted from untrusted Net addresses. The Leopard firewall also blocks only inbound connections; it won’t prevent programs from making outbound connections. This has become a big problem in the Windows world: spyware programs lodge themselves on hard drives and then “phone home” with sensitive private information.

While OS X 10.5 still includes ipfw, it’s effectively disabled by default. But you can enable and configure it from the command line or through a third-party application such as Hanynet’s free WaterRoof 2.0 () or NoobProof 1.1 (). And ipfw is compatible with Leopard’s socket filter, so you can combine the two to block untrusted applications from accepting connections and simultaneously restrict inbound and outbound traffic by ports and IP addresses.

Third-Party Firewalls

So why would you want to buy and install a third-party firewall when OS X’s seem to cover the bases pretty well? The primary reasons are more flexibility and better protection.

As per Apple’s documentation, developers can assign a desired category to their apps.

This is especially important as that’s where users find an app when they browse a specific category or filter search results, plus it also determines placement in the Categories tab.

As we reported over the weekend, the Supreme Court is hearing arguments today for a lawsuit brought against Apple over how it handles App Store sales. So far, Supreme Court justices seem to be leaning in favor of consumers and not Apple.

Here is some background on the case:

The antitrust lawsuit dates back to 2011 and alleges that Apple has created a monopoly by only allowing apps to be sold through its first-party App Store. In turn, the suit also says Apple uses that monopoly to charge excessive commissions.

For its part, Apple claims it is more of a middle man between consumers and app developers than a “distributor,” and believes the case doesn’t have any standing.

Apple argues that it is only acting as an agent for developers who sell to consumers via the App Store, not a distributor.

Some recent cases have been ruled in favor of companies, like the Supreme Court throwing out a lawsuit against American Express that alleged anti-completive practices (via Bloomberg). However, Reuters reports that the Supreme Court justices may be leaning towards siding with consumers and letting the case go to trial.

If the case is allowed, a final ruling isn’t expected until June of next year.

What’s so bad about Google Docs that I can’t recommend it for general use? There are any number of things that make it inferior to just about any OS X-based alternative, but I’ll focus on five main problem areas.

It’s a browser!

Google Docs is not actually a suite of applications. It’s a set of Web pages that are displayed by your Web browser. As such, its abilities are limited to the capabilities of your browser. This is actually the root of some of the other problems I’ll cover below; the browser simply can’t do it any other way.

Working in a browser restricts you in ways that native applications don’t. Want to open two documents side by side? Sure, you could do it by opening two browser windows. But that means having two copies of your browser environment open at the same time—and neither window will know about the other, except through the browser’s own menus.

Playing a Flash game in one browser tab while working on a presentation in another? Better hope the Flash plug-in doesn’t crash and bring down your entire browser. If it does, you’ll have to reopen all your Google Docs windows again, and hope your work was auto-saved in time.

Menu titles on what would be the menubar are rendered in a plain text font, making them hard to distinguish from the rest of the Google Docs interface. Once you find that menubar, clicking on one of its entries does indeed produce a menu—but, again, its text is hard to distinguish from the background. And because that menu lacks shadows, it blends into the page you’re working on.

If an entry on a Google Docs menu has a sub-menu, you need to hover your mouse over the top-level entry for a second before the sub-menu appears. If you then move the mouse too far, the sub-menu may vanish.

Below the menu bar, a row of icons appears in a toolbar. But you can’t customize that toolbar, nor can you move or resize it. There aren’t any floating palettes; everything is done via the menus, the tool bar, or what can be a huge contextual menu that appears when you Control-click.

The idea is to have the YouTube audio play on your very own internet radio station, and have the Sonos tune to it. Here is the sketch of the solution:

Cast receiver. The 'Send to TV' button of the phone's YouTube app uses the DIAL (or Cast Receiver) API to instruct your TV to play the selected YouTube content. The leapcast software (https://github.com/dz0ny/leapcast) emulates a Chromecast device, which understands the DIAL API. Install it on your server, and you will be able to use the Send to TV button to play the video on your server.
Internet radio. Use IceCast2 and Darkice to convert the audio output of your server into an Internet radio station the Sonos system can tune to. Whenever you send a video to your server with the Send to TV button, the radio station will broadcast the audio track of the video.
Monitor. A simple python script (below) monitors the audio output of the server, and instructs the Sonos system to tune to your radio station whenever it detects audio activity (using the SoCo remote control software - https://github.com/SoCo/SoCo).

USAA has just updated its free iPhone application, adding the ability to deposit checks with just an iPhone camera. The bank had previously allowed members to file deposits with a scanner in a similar manner; you just log in and upload images of the front and back of the check.

I installed the iPhone software and tested out the deposit process. I had to repeat several steps, but everything seemed to work well the second time I tried. Legible handwriting counts again for the first time since grade school.

It's probably the most obvious alternative to LogMeIn, and the most popular contender from the nominations thread. It's perhaps most notable as a tool that allows you to stream audio and video across computers with minimal latency, so if you love watching movies on your tablet that are stored on your desktop but don't want to deal with apps or compatibility issues, Splashtop is a great tool. It's not limited to that these days though—You can use the applications on your remote device like you were sitting right there, manage files without transferring them first in their own native applications, and more.

The only downside to Splashtop free is that it starts to get pricey when you really need remote access. $2/month will get you the ability to access your home computers off network, which is arguably the biggest draw of a remote access tool—so you can actually access your PC when you're away, or a friend or family member's PC without going to their house. It does require a little setup on the client side before you can connect too, but if your goal is to enjoy media remotely and do some light troubleshooting, it's worth a look. Chrome Remote Desktop supports Windows and OS X (and Linux, sort of), and is completely free for personal and commercial use. It's essentially just a Chrome app that you have to install in Chrome on any computer you want to connect to. You'll have to be logged in to Chrome on any computer you want to connect to as well, which is a bit of a bummer, but the great thing is that it runs in your browser, is super-easy to set up, and it's remarkably fast. I have been unable to use Mail for over a year now due to the fact that no matter what I do it asks me for my Gmail password every two minutes. I thought I would give it a try after upgrading to Yosemite Beta and I see it is still the same situation. Hard to believe that after YEARS of this known issue there is still no fix. Mail is unusable in this state and it forces me to us ***whisper*** Outlook ***gag***.

At least on Mavericks I could use Google Chat in Messages but that functionality is broken now in Yosemite.

Mac Keeps Asking For Icloud Password

I have deleted every Google related item in my keychain, deleted and reinstalled the account, said really nice things to my mac and it still won't cooperate. Now when I try to add the account In Yosemite it will only connect with Contacts and Calendar and can't even make the connection with Mail, Messages or Notes.

Strange because my Google Drive sync works just fine!

Anyone know a solution for this or are we going to wait a few more years for this remain unfixed?

Any help you can provide would be great. I would love to use Mail someday!

I've a Google account set up on a Mac of mine. OS X version 10.8.4 and everything else is up-to-date. And my Google account uses 2-step authentication.

I'm having a problem with my Google account on this Mac in the native Mail app. The problem is that when everything was working fine, one day, all of a sudden Mail asked for my Google password. I simply created a new application specific password. But after some time the same happened again and I ended up creating another application specific password.

Now it's happening again and it's kind of getting annoying.

Why does it keep asking for passwords when the one before was right and working? Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Also I should mention that my iCloud account, also set up on this Mac, functions perfectly.

If you have several devices accessing your Google account via IMAP you can reach the limit of connections Google permits. The limit is 15 connections per account, however, bear in mind that each client can open multiple connections. In my experience the limit is easily reached with 3 devices. I have read that the Thunderbird email client has a setting to specify how many connections it can open, Mail and Outlook do not have this option.

Your Mail client should prompt you with a message along the lines of 'Too many simultaneous connections.' However I believe on iOS devices and Apple Mail you may see a more generic error.

The workaround for this issue is to log in to the GMail web interface, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the 'Details' link. From the popup window click 'Sign out all other sessions'

Open your keychain and delete all duplicates for gmail account leaving only the newest one.

Then run the Keychain first aid in verify mode first to see if you have any problems.

If needed run the repair.

reboot
upgrade to OSX Capitan (the problem seems assocaited with Yosemite)
relaunch Mail
if relaunching doesn't work, try:
- quit Mail
- open Preferences->Internet Accounts - hopefully you won't need to log into your google account
- launch Mail again

I've tried all of these except the upgrade and had them solve the problem.

How do I get these apps?

Once you download Setapp, which is sort of like a small version of an app store, you can browse available titles and download whichever one you want to use. You'll need a credit card to sign up. Setapp supports Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, AMEX, Discovery, and JBS with plans to add PayPal in the future.

An icon for each app will also install onto your Mac, but only the icon. You won't just install 60 big apps all at once. Instead, they will only install fully after you open one.

You can then browse the app list for available apps. You can access it either from the Menu bar widget, by launching the Setapp app in Launchpad, searching in Spotlight, or opening a Finder window and clicking on Setapp in the sidebar.

Pick an app and double-click to open a preview summary. If it looks like something you want to use, click Open and it will download to your Mac. If you're not interested, just close the window.

Once installed, the app works just like it would if you had downloaded it from the App Store.

Is it any good?

As I mentioned, I've been using Setapp for a few months. I absolutely love it. Sure, I don't use all 60 apps, but I regularly use about a half dozen of them.

What I really like is the variety. If I'm looking for a type of app to use for a specific reason, I'll first look into my Setapp collection to see if I don't already have access to something. I recently thought about downloading a calculator app on my Mac. My first stop: Setapp. Sure enough, Numi was at my disposal. So, I downloaded it.

It's also great for trying out something you never even thought you needed. I saw this app called iMazing, which rolls a bunch of utilities into one, including backing up, transferring, and extracting data from your iPhone. With Setapp, I was able to test it out to see if I liked it without worrying about spending money on an app I might not end up using.

If you decide you don't want the app on your Mac anymore, you can remove it, but it will still be a part of Setapp if you ever want it back. Because it is listed alphabetically in the Setapp list, it is very easy to find again.

All of the apps that I've tried have been stellar quality. These are fantastic products that you should already have on your Mac (which I do have some of). As long as Setapp continues to grow content, the monthly fee is well worth it. As I mentioned when Setapp first launched in beta, the apps are worth quite a lot. You could easily pay $9.99 per month for a decade and still come out on top with all the apps available in Setapp.

OK, I'm in. How do I sign up?

Setapp is available now from their website. It requires a Mac running OS X 10.10 or higher and an internet connection. You'll also need a valid credit card, which will be automatically charged monthly after the free 30-day trial.
